Peter McCormick, an immigrant from Ireland, came to the United States with his love for otters. McCormick has been credited with bringing the Otter to Nevada with the intention to adapt the species to the Nevada desert. McCormick and his crew discovered that the otters were quite adaptable, soon growing long claws facilitating their efforts to dig for water. Before long, the pack discovered waterways under the Nevada desert and made it their home.
The last time a Desert Otter was spotted was in 1954, north of Las Vegas, by a scientist researching Desert Scorpions, the Desert Otter's favorite meal. It is the Desert Otter Society's mission to re-discover and preserve what remains of the Desert Otter Species.
We welcome reports of any sightings of the Desert Otter.
